This carpet is directly from Carpet City Bhavani Handloom weavers. Bhavani is a town situated approximately 12 kms away from Erode, in Erode district of Tamilnadu, India. Bhavani is the joining place of two rivers namely Cauvery and Bhavani.
Bhavani is well known for its textile industry. It is also popularly known as the town of Jamakkalam. Jamakkalam is being manufactured here for more than 50 years or so.Jamakkalam manufacturing handloom machine is present in each and every house of Bhavani and its surroundings. Mostly women society in and around Bhavani are involved in production of Jamakkalam.Bhavani is well known for its textile industry. It is also popularly known as the town of Jamakkalam. Bhavani handweaven Jamakkalam is a composition of cotton thread and woollen thread.Its speciality is that its completely hand weaven. Even though the type of thread, colour and design of Jamakkalam’s are being constantly modernised, the basic traditions and terms of its production process is still maintained as taught by ancestors.
Jamakkalam produced in Bhavani are very thick and long lasting. With sparkling colours, these Jamakkalam’s have a very delightful look. Colour dye and water of Bhavani town make grand appearance of Jamakkalam’s possible. The process of dying, looming, designing follow a craft legacy. Paintings on Jamakkalam are not only done using paints but thread weaving is also included. Hence the have a special feel and delicacy. Colour of Bhavani Jamakkalam doesnot fade very easily. They look brand new even after 10 years of usage. Even today Jamakkalam has a very auspicious space in occasions like marriage, baby shower, ear piercing and so on. People consider Jamakkalam as a sign of tradition.
